Decluttering Your Living Room: 6 Helpful Tips

 In Cleaning Tips

Your living room is the center of your home. It’s the place best built for large gatherings. Because of this, it’s the room where you and your family and friends spend most of your time. However, with so much activity going on in this area, it’s easy for things to begin to pile up. Having a clean living room is essential not only for impressing guests but for your own mental health as well. The last thing you want is for people to see your messy house, and it’s difficult to relax in a cluttered environment.

If your living room is starting to look like a tornado ran through it, then you’ll want to continue reading below. Here are several helpful tips to get a clean living room!

1. Decorative Containers on Bookshelves

One fun way to start decluttering is to use decorative containers on a bookshelf. Find a nice bookshelf, if you don’t already have one. You should look for one that will complement your living room well and one that won’t take up too much space.

Then, find fun containers to place on your bookshelf to hold various items in. If you don’t use containers and simply place everything on the bookshelf, the bookshelf will begin to look cluttered. To avoid this, find different types of bins to use to hold different kinds of items.

For example, use woven bins or cloth-covered bins to hold any office supplies or loose items in. You can use clear bins for larger items that won’t look cluttered inside of them. Have fun with it and don’t hesitate to mix match.

2. Furniture Pieces that Double as Storage

When the must-have living items list begins to pile up, you’ll appreciate having furniture pieces that double as storage. This type of furniture is ideal for small living rooms, but also comes in handy when you just have too much stuff.

Family board games, food trays, remotes, puzzles, and other items are all essential to keep in the living room if this is where you use them the most. However, keeping all of these items out in full view screams clutter!

Instead, find furniture pieces such as an ottoman that opens and hold blankets or other items, a side table that has storage under its surface, and other similar pieces.

3. Eliminate Useless Throw Pillows

As much as you may love your throw pillows, there’s no need to have a ton of them. Having too many pillows on your couch could cause the room to look cluttered. If all of the pillows aren’t the same, it could make it look even worst.

If you’re having to move pillows over or remove them from the couch to sit down, what’s the real purpose of them. Instead, choose two or three that you like the best (and that all blend well with one another) and then eliminate the others.

This will also help open up your living room, making it seem larger than before.

4. Use Smaller Furniture Items for Your Space

Another way to make the space look bigger and less cluttered is to use smaller furniture items. Using large and bulky pieces could work great for a very large living room. However, if you don’t have a lot of space, then you should consider trading in your oversized furniture items for much smaller pieces.

Use chairs that fit easily under tables, use desks that can fold together, and lamps that can fit on side tables rather than taking up floor space. The less space your furniture takes up, the more space you have for other important items and the less crowded your living room will feel.

5. Declutter Using Three Categories

Although there are different ways to store your items out of the way and keep your living room decluttered, you should always consider decluttering by using the three categories rule. This is when you take all items from your living room, or any room for that matter, and separate them into three piles.

The piles should consist of the following:

  1. Things to keep
  2. Things to throw away
  3. Things to donate

This helps ensure that you’re only keeping the things that you actually need. You should never try to find storage space for things that you never use or things that are broken.

6. Clean All Surfaces Starting from Top to Bottom

Once you’re done decluttering, it’s time to start cleaning. Clean all surfaces in your living room starting from top to bottom. You don’t want to vacuum your floors only to dust your fans and need to pull your vacuum out again due to fallen dust.

Start by cleaning your ceilings and fans of all dust. One great tip is to use your vacuum for cleaning dust in high areas such as these. Then wipe down all of your lower surfaces.

Clean all glass and windows, and then sweep, vacuum, and mop if need be!

Don’t Go Another Day Without a Clean Living Room

There’s something about a clean living room that makes everyone feel welcomed and at home. Don’t let the clutter stop you from using your living room how you’d like. You can still play all of your favorite board games and puzzles, just find a good place for them out of sight to keep the clutter at a minimum.
